Deploying a Locally Hosted Azure Stack Environment for a Financial-Sector Client

Built alongside a Microsoft-partnered Dell team to bring Azure's cloud model on site, keeping financial-sector data inside the country rather than in a public Azure region.

The challenge

What we walked into

A financial-sector client needed cloud infrastructure with the consistency and services model of Microsoft Azure, but data residency requirements meant the environment had to stay physically local rather than run in a public Azure region.

Microsoft's Azure Stack product line answers exactly this need: the same Azure control plane and services, running on hardware inside the client's own environment. Deploying it required close coordination with a Microsoft-partnered team to get the platform installed and integrated correctly.

What we did

The approach

01

Coordinate with the Microsoft-partnered deployment team

Worked alongside a Dell team, partnered with Microsoft on the Azure Stack rollout, while based at the employer's site. Dell handled elements of the hardware and Microsoft partnership requirements; the local team handled on-site deployment and integration.

02

Deploy the Azure Stack environment

Installed and configured the locally hosted Azure Stack environment so it could deliver Azure-consistent services on infrastructure that stayed inside the country.

03

Bring the platform into service for financial-sector users

Brought the environment into production use for local financial-sector users, giving them an Azure-style cloud experience without moving regulated data into a public cloud region.

Results

What came out of it

  • A locally hosted Azure Stack environment stood up in partnership with a Microsoft-aligned deployment team.
  • Financial-sector users gained access to Azure-consistent cloud services on infrastructure that never left the country.
  • Delivered without requiring the client to accept the data residency trade-offs of a public Azure region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why deploy Azure Stack instead of using public Azure directly?

Financial-sector data residency requirements meant the client needed data to stay on infrastructure physically inside the country. Azure Stack delivers the same Azure services and management model as public Azure, but runs on hardware the client controls locally, which satisfied that requirement.

What was Dell's role versus yours in this project?

Dell's team, partnered with Microsoft on the Azure Stack program, handled elements of the hardware and partnership side of the deployment. The on-site deployment and integration work for the client's environment was handled from the employer's side, working alongside Dell's team rather than in place of it.

Is Azure Stack still relevant, given Microsoft has since introduced Azure Local?

Microsoft has evolved the product line since this engagement, most recently under the Azure Local name, but the underlying need it answers has not changed. Regulated organizations that cannot put data in a public cloud region still need a way to get Azure's services on infrastructure they control, which is the same problem this deployment solved.

Can this kind of deployment be done for other regulated industries?

Yes. Data residency requirements show up across financial services, healthcare, government, and other regulated sectors. The deployment pattern, an Azure-consistent environment on locally controlled infrastructure, applies wherever public cloud residency is not an option.
